In enzymology a chitin synthase (EC 2.4.1.16) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reactionUDP-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine + [14-(N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminyl)]n UDP + [14-(N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminyl)]n+1Thus the two substrates of this enzyme are UDP-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and [[[14-(N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminyl)]n]] whereas its two products are UDP and [[[14-(N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminyl)]n+1]].This enzyme belongs to the family of glycosyltransferases specifically the hexosyltransferases.
