Cereulide is dodecadepsipeptide resembling valinomycin. It is produced by Bacillus cereus. Cereulide is cyclic polypeptide containing 3 repeats of 4 amino acids: D-Oxy-Leu—D-Ala—L-Oxy-Val—L-Val. It is very toxic a cytotoxin that destroys mitochondrion. Cereulide acts as ionophore. It has high affinity to K + ions. Exposure to cereulide causes in mitochondria loss of the membrane potential and uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation.
