The Calville Blanc d’hiver (Calville’s white winter) is an apple cultivar. It originated in France in the 17th century from a chance seedling. It is noted for unusual looks (somewhat lumpy on the side) but excellent reward when tried and for having an unusually high vitamin C content. It is the apple of choice for Tarte Tatin in France.[citation needed]
