In enzymology a caffeate O-methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.68) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reactionS-adenosyl-L-methionine + 34-dihydroxy-trans-cinnamate S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-trans-cinnamateThus the two substrates of this enzyme are S-adenosyl methionine and 34-dihydroxy-trans-cinnamate (caffeic acid) whereas its two products are S-adenosylhomocysteine and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-trans-cinnamate (ferulic acid). This enzyme belongs to the family of transferases specifically those transferring one-carbon group methyltransferases.
