The Butte Miners’ Union formerly known as the Butte Workingmen’s Union was formed in 1878 as a reaction to working conditions in the mines of Butte Montana. Miners and workers in the mine lived their lives fearful of injury and accidents in the mines. The fatality rate in the Butte mines were higher than Colorado’s Idaho’s and South Dakota’s. Even mines in Britain and Germany did not experience as high fatality rates.
