Bruit (/ˈbruːt/) is the unusual sound that blood makes when it rushes past an obstruction (called turbulent flow) in an artery when the sound is auscultated with the bell portion of a stethoscope. The term bruit the French word for noise simply refers to the sound. A related term is vascular murmur which should not be confused with a heart murmur.The location of the stethoscope when the sound is observed can affect the diagnosis.
