Blue Nudes refer to a series of gouaches découpées by Henri Matisse executed in 1952. They represent female nudes either seated or standing and are among Matisse’s final works in any medium. During the early-to-mid-1940s Matisse was in poor health. Eventually by 1950 he stopped painting in favor of his paper cutouts. The Blue Nudes are a major series’ of Matisse’s final body of works known as the cutouts.The color blue signified distance and volume to Matisse.
