Batey /ˈbeɪteɪ/ is a family name that originated in the North of England and Scotland. Some families came from the Carlisle and Yorkshire area however some have been found as far south as Bristol. One particular line of Batys can be traced to the marriage of John Baty to Jane Jackson in 1671 in the church of St Mary the Virgin in High Heskett Cumbria (see Beatty Project 2000 lineage 291). That particular line remained in High Heskett for the next two hundred years.
