Balthasar Anton Dunker a landscape painter and etcher was born at Saal near Stralsund in 1746. He was a pupil of Jakob Philipp Hackert and of Vien and was more distinguislied as an etcher than as a painter. His works are after Roos Van der Does Hackert and Schutz and consist of costumes and manners of the French before the Revolution illustrations of books and other miscellaneous subjects. Among them were some excellent landscapes as the ‘Environs of Berne’ and views of Leghorn.
