The Aurès (Berber: Awras Latin: Aurasium Arabic: جبال الأوراس) is an eastern prolongation of the Atlas Mountain System that lies to the east of the Saharan Atlas in northeastern Algeria and northwestern Tunisia. The rugged terrain of the Aurès mountains is one of the less developed areas in the Maghreb.
