Amerind or Amerindian is a portmanteau of American Indian. It refers collectively to the indigenous peoples of the Americas who lived in the Western Hemisphere before European arrival to the continent. The word was coined by the American Anthropological Association in Washington D.C.. Some of its earliest uses can be attributed to the paper Anthropology in Early American Writings by J. D. McGuire of the American Anthropological Association and Dr. Alexander F.
