The American Grand National was a United States steeplechase horse race for Thoroughbreds sanctioned by the National Steeplechase Association. It is now known as the Breeders’ Cup Grand National Steeplechase.It was first held in 1899 at Morris Park in New York covering a distance 2½ miles. From 1905 to 1958 it was run at Belmont Park over a distance of 2½ miles except for 1957 and 1958 when it was expanded to 3⅛ miles.
