Alexios I Megas Komnenos or Alexius I Megas Comnenus (Greek: Αλέξιος Α΄ Μέγας Κομνηνός Alexios I Megas Komnēnos; c. 1182 – February 1 1222) founded the Empire of Trebizond in 1204 and ruled it until his death in 1222. He and his brother David were the only two male descendants of the Byzantine Emperor Andronikos I dethroned and killed in 1185 who seriously claimed to represent the legitemate government of the Empire following the conquest of Constantinople in 1204.
