Afrikaners are a Southern African ethnic group descended from predominantly Dutch settlers first arriving in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Colloquially referred to as Boers they have traditionally dominated South Africa’s politics and agriculture. According to the South African National Census of 2011 Afrikaners made up an estimated 5.2% of the total South African populace and form the country’s largest European ancestry group.
