It was discovered by Luciano Tesi and Maura Tombelli at the Pistoia Mountains Astronomical Observatory in San Marcello Pistoiese Italy on October 13 2001. It is named after Giorgio Bianciardi an Italian biomedicine and astrobiology researcher at the University of Siena.
