5-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) is an endogenous eicosanoid. It is a product of the cellular metabolism of arachidonic acid by the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase. The enzyme first forms 5-hydroperoxy-eicosatetraenoate (5-HpETE) from arachidonic acid. 5-HpETE is then reduced by ubiquitous cellular peroxidases to 5-HETE or forms 5(6)-oxido-eicosatetraenoate which is then further metabolized to leukotrienes such as leukotriene B4. In addition 5-HETE is a modulator of tubuloglomerular feedback.
