It is a member of the Hungaria family.It has an eccentricity of 0.0530553 and an orbital period of ~941 days (2.58 years).Hoag has an average orbital speed of 21.72394894 km/s and an inclination of 25.0581°.The asteroid was discovered at the Palomar Observatory on August 20 1982 by Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker.It is named after the American astronomer Arthur Allen Hoag. Its Provisional designation was 1982 QQ.
