The 2009 season was São Paulo’s 80th season since club’s existence. For the third year consecutive Tricolor fall in semifinals of Campeonato Paulista this time losing to rival Corinthians. In Copa Libertadores was defeated in quarterfinals by Cruzeiro after two losses 1–2 (away) 0–2 (home). At the league the club broke the triumph’s sequence of the three previous titles. Ending in the 3rd position took a place in Copa Libertadores.
