The 1998–98 S.L. Benfica season involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Divisão and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the UEFA Champions League by finishing 2nd in the previous Primeira Divisão.Having arrived in mid-season Graeme Souness had renewed confidence to make a squad as he saw fit to the new season. Benfica signed Michael Thomas and Mark Pembridge in July 1998 Dean Saunders in January 1999 plus Gary Charles and Steve Harkness in March.
