The 1995–96 season saw Dynamo Dresden relegated two levels to the third-tier Regionalliga Nordost – they had originally been related to the 2. Bundesliga but failed to meet the financial requirements to play at this level so were forced to drop down into the Regionalliga. As a result almost the entire squad from last season was lost with only three players remaining and the club had to build an entirely new team with a number of players coming through from the youth and reserve teams.
