The match was played on 12 August 1989 between 1988–89 Football League champions Arsenal and 1989–89 FA Cup winners Liverpool.The two teams had met in the last game of the previous season in a title decider at Anfield which Arsenal won 2–0 with a late goal from Michael Thomas.
