The 1988-89 season was FC Dinamo Bucureşti’s 40th season in Divizia A. After a couple of seasons without remarkable results in the European competitions Dinamo qualifies in the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners’ Cup. Their opponents in this phase are the Italian squad Sampdoria Genoa. The two games end with draws but Sampdoria moves forward due to away goal.
