The 1977 Brownlow Medal was unique as it was one of only two times where two field umpires voted for the best players under the 3-2-1 system. This meant that the winner of the Brownlow had a higher number of votes than usual. The winner of the 1977 Brownlow Medal Graham Teasdale from the South Melbourne Football Club recorded 59 votes to pick up the win as the fairest and best player during the 1978 Victorian Football League home-and-away season.
