The second Gulf Cup of Nations was held in Saudi Arabia in March 1972. The tournament was won by Kuwait claiming their second title. Bahrain also took part in the competition but they walked off the field during their match against Saudi Arabia to protest the officiating; they were subsequently ejected from the competition and their results were expunged.
