Borussia Mönchengladbach won the DFB-Pokal 1972–73. As in the year before the knock-out rounds were played over two legs but the final was decided in a single game.The final was supposed to be Günter Netzer’s farewell game prior to his transfer to Real Madrid. However Borussia’s manager Hennes Weisweiler left him out of the starting lineup as he was already preparing for the time after Netzer’s departure so he brought on Herbert Wimmer as central midfielder and team captain.
