The 1897 U.S. Open was the third U.S. Open. The golf tournament was held September 17 1897 at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton Illinois. Joe Lloyd prevailed by one-stroke over Willie Anderson to win his first U.S. Open title.Willie Anderson began the final round four clear of Joe Lloyd. Lloyd however shot a 79 over the last 18-holes to Anderson’s 84 to finish a stroke ahead. Lloyd’s win was capped by a 3 at the 461-yard finishing hole.
