The inaugural 1877 Wimbledon Championship was a men’s tennis tournament held at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in London. It was the world’s first official lawn tennis tournament as well as the inaugural edition of what was later to be called a Grand Slam tournament or Major. A set of rules was drawn up for the tournament which was derived from the first standardized rules of tennis issued in May 1875 by the Marylebone Cricket Club.
