172996 Stooke is a small asteroid that orbits in the main belt of the asteroid belt. It was discovered in 2006 by Paul A. Wiegert at the Mauna Kea Observatory. The asteroid is named after the Canadian planetary cartographer Philip John Stooke who studies the history of planetary exploration and mapping and has developed cartographic tools for mapping non-spherical worlds.
