The main belt asteroid (133243) Essen was discovered on September 2 2003 by the Walter-Hohmann-Sternwarte in Essen Germany. The asteroid got the preliminary name 2003 RT1 after notice was given to the Minor Planet Center.More observatories observed the asteroid the following year and the trajectory of 2003 RT1 could be determined. The name Essen was chosen by the Walter-Hohmann Observatory in honor of the city it is located in.
