Kontradans or the French-Haitian Contredanse is the creolized dance music that formed in the 18th Century in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (the modern-day Haiti) that evolved from the European contredanse that traces its origins back to the English country dance or (contra dance) which eventually spread throughout the Caribbean and Louisiana from the French colonists creoles (mulattos) and blacks that fled Haiti during the Haitian Revolution.
